Restoration period About 1819-1821 Dating of the work : considering the presence of the epaulette of squadron leader, rank to which our man is appointed on April 24, 1819 and his star of knight of the Legion of Honor (he becomes an officer in the order on April 25, 1821), our work was realized between these two dates. Biography : Jean Casimir BOUDON DE SAINT-AMANS, born in Agen on February 2, 1785, squadron leader in the regiment of lancers of the royal guard, knight of Saint-Louis, and officer of the Legion of Honor. Saint Cyrien (1803), he took part in the campaigns of Spain and Russia under the Empire, in particular within the 7th regiment of mounted chasseurs. He distinguished himself at the battles of Wagram (especially at Znaïm) and Toulouse (especially at Saint Germé); he was seriously wounded several times while fighting very bravely. He distinguished himself in agronomy and a patent for "a wine and an alcohol distilled from the still green plum" was issued to him in 1855. He should not be confused with his father, the naturalist Jean Florimond Boudon de St Amans (1748-1831). François KINSON (1774-1839) Born in Bruges, he obtained a gold medal at the Academy of this city. A few years later, he left for Paris. In 1799, he won the first prize for portraiture. He exhibited, at the 1808 Salon, several portraits of the imperial family, including the one we are presenting here, which earned him the great gold medal. The same year, Jerome, then king of Westphalia, appointed him his first painter. At that time, the government had appointed the most distinguished artists of the capital to paint the full-length portraits of the marshals of France, ministers, etc. Kinson painted those of the Prince of Ponte-Corvo, now King of Sweden, and of the minister Dejean. Then he was appointed a member of the Bruges Academy and the Royal Societý of Fine Arts in Ghent. In the same year, Kinson had the honor of presenting to His Majestý the King of France and the Royal Family, the beautiful full-length portrait of HRH the Duchess of Angouleme. Kinson was the painter of H. R. H. the Duchess of Berry; he enjoyed in Paris a deserved reputation, his talent earned him just rewards and the decoration of the Legion of Honor. After the death of Louis XVIII, Kinson was also appointed painter to King Charles X.
