Description

RARE LOUIS XIV COMMODE BY THOMAS HACHE H. 86 ; W. 117 ; D. 70 cm Provenance : Sale of the furniture of a castle of Dauphiné, Aguttes, June 14, 1984, Clermont-Ferrand, lot 347. Private collection. Bibliography : Le génie des Hache, P. et F. Rouge, Faton 2005, described p. 217 ; and eight other models of similar shape and decoration, pp. 218 and 220-226 Opening with three rows of drawers, flat on the front and on the sides. Drawer fronts veneered with green-stained ash and ash burr and "Italian" marquetry. Sides veneered with ash and burr ash stained green around a diamond enclosing a large marquetry "Italian" foliage and acanthus on a background of burned wood. Thomas HACHE (1664-1747), cabinetmaker of the Duke of Orleans, Grenoble around 1710-1715 Marble and old floor brought back. Gilding of the drawers, carved front legs, springs and rear legs added. In the 1984 sale, it had handles "aux valets" added in the upper row and fixed leafy handles of the period. fixed handles of the period. A CHEST OF DRAWERS PRECIOUSLY INLAID WITH ORIGINAL MOTIFS "À L'ITALIENNE This model is one of the very first chests of drawers designed by Thomas Hache at the beginning of the 18th century, because of its non-rounded shape and its decoration of "Italian" marquetry on a background of native burr wood, in this case ash burr stained exclusively in green, on which are veneered the famous "Italian" marquetries of Thomas Hache. These pre-prepared veneers are composed of foliated scrolls and flowers on a burnt wood background, between the draw handles which are surrounded by another original motif of C-shaped scrolls topping a cartouche with a background of crosses and dots on a light wood background. Note the frieze, executed in counterpart, very original that runs on the three crosspieces of the front and, without interruption, from the lower crosspiece of the front to that of the sides. The precocity of this chest of drawers can also be seen in the absence of a top rail, an innovation that will appear around 1720-1725, allowing for wood or marble tops. But the marquetry tops are more fragile and this one has disappeared, requiring the addition of a floor to receive a marble and to be able to lock the upper drawer.
