Adolphe-Félix CALS (1810-1880) Saint Francis of Assisi Oil on canvas, signed and dated upper right "Cals fecit 1847". H. 46 cm L. 38 cm HVS Restorations Study for the painting "Saint Francis of Assisi" presented at the Paris Salon of 1847 (N°264). "Cals is the author of several good canvases, among others a well-drawn and widely painted Saint Francis of Assisi, which has the character of unction that is too often lacking in modern religious painting, and of which the Spaniards, the first painters of monks, ecstasies and ascetic scenes, have such a good secret" (Théophile Gautier, Salon de 1847).
