Louis Léopold BOILLY (1761-1843) Portrait of Jacques BERTHIER de GRANDRY (1777-1856) Oil on canvas, inscription on the back with the identification of the model H. 22 cm L. 17 cm HVS Original frames in wood and gilded stucco from the Empire period. Small lacks of stucco on the frame. Bibliography : E. Breton- P. Zuber, "Boilly, Le peintre de la société parisienne de Louis XVI à Louis-Philippe", Paris, 2019, vol. II, p. 763. no. 1076. King Louis XVIII granted him a patent as bodyguard of the company of Havre on November 1, 1815, with the rank of lieutenant of cavalry and rank of November 1, 1814. Grandry was later appointed guard of the sleeve, a position he held on July 5, 1816 at the wedding ceremonies of Monseigneur le Duc de Berry, Dauphin of France. An identification of the model with Jacques' older brother, Claude BERTHIER de GRANDRY (1776-1860) has also been suggested.
