Description

SALES (François de), Traité de l'Amour de Dieu. Lyon, Rigaud, 1617. 17 x 12 cm. In-8 of [48]-747-[19] pp. Tan calf, spine with ornate bands (later binding, early 18th c.). Very worn binding. Second edition of the masterpiece of St. Francis de Sales (1567-1622), after the original published by the same publisher in 1616. It is in fact a reprint of the original edition with the same pagination, printing and colophon as the latter, but the text has been recomposed. The author continues his teaching of piety begun with the Introduction, by destining it more especially to the nuns of the order of the Visitation of Saint Mary that he founded in 1610 with Jeanne de Chantal and by developing a more mystical approach of devotion. Beautiful engraved title vignette with the Sacred Heart. Early handwritten note on the title page "This book is from the first Monastery of the Visitation Sainte Marie de Paris / Noviciat M.". (Brunet V, 73.). Mottling, ink stains in the margin, some foxing. Expert : Cabinet Poulain, 5 rue de Saintonge 75003 PARISSALES (F
