Description

DELACROIX, Eugène (1798-1863). L.A.S. addressed to Victor HUGO. S.l.n.d. 1 p. in-8 oblong. Pencil on paper. Autograph address on the back with sentence crossed out by the artist. Minimal creasing. Letter from the great romantic painter addressed to the father of Romanticism. "M.A. de Vigny has been kind enough to engage me in reading Romeo and Juliet, but he forgot to write me his address. Would you give it to the bearer of this note. Excuse the paper, the pencil, the painter & - for the true friend ". This bill most probably dates from April 1827, when Roméo et Juliette, a play written by Émile Deschamps with Alfred de Vigny, was read to the committee of the Théâtre français. This Shakespearean translation had a profound influence on Victor Hugo, who shortly afterwards published his preface to Cromwell. It was also on this date that Hugo moved to the rue Notre-Dame des Champs, in a vast house that was destroyed when the boulevard Raspail was built. A second autograph letter signed by Delacroix is attached. S.l., January 21, 1863. 1 p. in-8. Beautiful signature.
