PIERRE JOUBERT NEW GUIDE TO HERALDING, Ouest-France 1977 Original illustration. Signed. Gouache on paper 28.5 × 44.5 cm (11.22 × 17.52 in.) For this 1977 edition of his famous guide to heraldry, Pierre Joubert illustrates the arms of the House of Austria and describes the illustration as follows: "The Austrian duke, Leopold II, fighting under the walls of Ptolemais with Frederick Barbarossa and Richard the Lionheart, was so riddled with wounds that his chain mail became entirely red, except for the area covered by the belt. Leopold II, by his very appearance as a bloody combatant, had just added to the Armorial the arms that his descendants were to bear in the centuries to come: Gules with a Silver Fasce were henceforth the arms of the House of Austria." What power in this illustration of immense violence but that Joubert knows how to make visible by a large public. Jean-François Vivier
