MANUSCRIT. - VAUBAN. De l'attaque et la deffense des places par M. le M. de V. [Late 17th century]. In-8, fawn calf, triple gilt fillet, spine decorated with nerves, gilt edges (Binding of the epoch). Title, first part "De l'attaque des places": 553 pp. with 10 unnumbered pp. at the end; second part "De la deffense des places": pp. 554 to 628; table: (7) pp. (qq. pagination errors and several blank pages in the volume). This treaty was written at the request of Louis XIV, for the instruction of his grandson, the Duke of Burgundy, and presented to the King in 1704. Remained secret for several years, this treaty nevertheless knew in manuscript form a hidden diffusion, before being published for the first time in 1737 by Pierre de Hondt, in the Hague. Some old additions and corrections. Rouss. Binding damaged, upper hinge split.
