Description

SAINT JEROME. Liber Epistolarum Saneti Hieronymis Primae partis. Secundae partis [S.n, s.l] in folio 151 and 176 ff. n.ch. Bound at the beginning of the 19th century, half basane (spine split). Rare gothic printing, probably from Lyon, precious in particular for the large figure of DÜRER, full page woodcut representing Saint Jerome in his cell [who] extracts a thorn from the lion's foot". This is the first known xylograph by Albrecht Dürer. It was first printed in Basel, by Nicolas Kessler, in 1492. It is reproduced here 3 times: -on the front of the title of the summary ["Inventarium"], on the back of the title printed in red "Liber epistolarium" and on the back of the summary ["Inventarium"] of the second part. The small window above the shelf in the first Basel edition has disappeared. According to Hollstein, the wood proofs without the window were used for two Lyon editions: by Sacon in 1507 and Benedictis, 1513 (Baudrier XI, 407-408). A copy with this particularity in the Auckland Museum. It is also decorated with numerous historiated initials. Corners slightly trimmed on the first folio, and a small hole at the bottom of the woodcut by Dürer on the same folio.
