AUGUSTE GODCHAUX (France, 1825-1884). "Court Character". Oil on panel. Signed in the lower left corner. Measurements: 41 x 22 cm; 54,5 x 36 cm (frame). In 1860, in France, Auguste Godchaux patented a bobbin machine that remained in operation until 1940. The work is realist, marked by a personal colorist sensibility that reproduces the quality of his costumes.

Mémoires de Mademoiselle Avrillion, première femme de chambre de l'Impératrice, sur la vie privée de Joséphine, sa famille et sa cour; ornés d'un très-beau portrait de l'Impératrice et de fac-simile de lettres de l'Empereur. Paris, Ladvocat. 1833. 2 vol. in-8, 1/2 green calf. Spine without nerves decorated with caissons; Binding well established circa 1850. A good copy of the first edition of these memoirs by Maxime de Villemarest (1784-1852), a former protégé of Talleyrand. They had "a prodigious success and contributed to reinforcing Joséphine's popularity... Queen Hortense considered Mademoiselle Avrillion's Mémoires to be fairly accurate, as Joséphine's chambermaid must have collaborated with Villemarest. These memoirs are to Joséphine what Constant's memoirs are to Napoleon..." (Tulard 54)

Large witnesses preserved, largely uncut. ORIGINAL EDITION illustrated with 30 unpublished full-page drawings by Paul COLIN, including a color frontispiece. Printed at 300 numbered copies on Lafuma. 1 of these (n°2). Apart from a few browning marks in the lower margin, a VERY GOOD EDITION.
