Description

ATTRIBUTED TO LOUIS BOUDAN (active ca. 1687-1709), UNDER THE DIRECTION OF FRANÇOIS-ROGER DE GAIGNIÈRES (1642-1715), AFTER JEAN PICHORE (1502-1521) John, Duke of Burgundy Pen and black ink, gouache and gold paint highlights on laid paper 13.5 x 10.2 cm. Handwritten inscription in ink: "Monstrelet V.I no. 19 Chap. IX XX VI Bilb. de M. Colbert. John Duke of Burgundy 1418." (top) Our drawing was probably made for one of the "Albums Gaignières", from the name of this scholar who undertook the constitution of a formidable iconotheque freezing, on paper, the memory of famous monuments, manuscripts, illuminations, especially of medieval time. In 1690-1691, Gaignières had the precious manuscript of the Chroniques, written by Enguerrand de Monstrelet (c. 1400 -1453), illustrated by Jean Pichore, formerly in the Colbert library, and today in the BnF (Ms. Fr. 2678 and 2679). Our drawing takes up the miniature that introduces chapter IX (folio 309 recto): "How the duke of Burgundy went to the emperor Sigismund ()", but isolates the character of John, duke of Burgundy. The complete scene presents the duke who, in 1418, visited Sigismund of Luxembourg (1368-11437), emperor, who was temporarily residing in Montbéliard, "at which place they had a great parliament together".
