Bechtel, 603/P-126 // Brunet, II-226 // USTC, 55596. (4f.)-CXIIII / +4, A-T6 / 43 lines on 2 columns, gothic car / 178 x 247 mm. Very rare first edition of this novel of chivalry, which also had another undated edition published by Jehan Bonfons in the second half of the 16th century. Very little is known about its author. Born in La Rochelle in the first half of the 15th century, Perrinet Dupin or Du Pin probably spent time at the Court of Savoy between 1458 and 1482. He was appointed ducal secretary by Duchess Yolande in the 1470s, probably with the task of writing a history of the counts and first duke of Savoy. He left us a Chronique du Comte rouge, which tells the story of Amédée VII, Count of Savoy. Prior to this Savoyard period, in 1448, Perrinet Du Pin had written a novel of chivalry entitled La Conqueste de Grece faicte par le trespreux et redoubte en chevalerie Philippe de Madien. La Conqueste de Grece faicte par le trespreux et redoubte en chevalerie Philippe de Madien, which he dedicated to the Duchesse de Lusignan, wife of Duke Louis. It is illustrated with a fine woodcut on the title depicting the knight Philippe de Madien in armor, on a caparisoned horse, setting out to conquer Greece, the arms of France on the verso of the title, a woodcut depicting the author at his lectern, 8 woodcuts in the text illustrating the novel and the printer's mark on the last leaf. A superb copy of this very rare novel of chivalry, of which we have found no copies in classic private collections, except for one at Firmin-Didot cited by Bechtel. Minimal spotting to first 2 leaves and a few pale old rings.
