Paul VERLAINE (1844-1896) Poet. Autograph letter signed to his friend Irénée Decroix, wine merchant in Fiefs in Pas-de-Calais, whose wedding he was the witness of and godfather of his son. The letter, sent from Paris on January 24, 1889, is three pages long, written in black ink on green paper and accompanied by a self-portrait of Verlaine, representing him as a sick man, wearing a cap, sitting in his hospital bed, drawn at the end of the letter, with captions. The year 1889 marks the beginning of the poet's physical decline.
