Ghom rug. Iran, first half of the twentieth century. Hand knotted wool. It has marks of use and wear. Measurements: 206 x 135 cm. Persian hand-knotted rug, with a design of floral ornaments that sprout from a vase placed in the compositional center, on a navy blue field. Red, ochre, beige, blue and white tones predominate. These carpets are knotted in the sacred city of Ghom, in central Persia. The material used to make them is silk, which makes them thin and compact. These carpets are very well elaborated and, in some cases, are decorated in great detail.

Horst Strempel (1904-1975), German painter who studied in Breslau under Otto Mueller and Oskar Moll and from 1927 under Karl Hofer in Berlin, after the war professor at the Weißensee art academy and fled to the West in 1953. Japanese bronze Okimono, Meiji period, 1868-1912. The sculpture depicts a mythological kappa mother with one baby turtle boy on his back and one little turtle boy hand in hand beside each other. Signed on the bottom. A kappa is a reptiloid kami with similarities to yōkai found in traditional Japanese folklore. They are typically depicted as green, human-like beings with webbed hands and feet and turtle-like carapaces on their backs. Dimensions: H: 5 in., ( 12.7 cm.) Excellent.

Artists who created paintings comparable in motif and style include the main master of the Roman High Baroque Carlo Maratta or Maratti (1625- 1713), Giovanni Battista Salvi gen. Sassoferrato (1609 - 1685) and their Florentine contemporary Carlo Dolci (1616 - 1686), in whose circle or circle of pupils the creator of this painting is probably also to be found.
