Rodolphe BRESDIN Le Repos en Égypte à l'âne bâté, 1871, etching and roulette, 29 x 23 cm, margins 37 x 30.5 cm (Van Gelder 138 i/ii, Préaud 53-54), fine proof, probably of the first state of the etching, very rare, stamped (Lugt 295b), on vellum, formerly washed (the color of the stamp has turned purple), yellowed, tear at the upper plate cut, stains and soiling in the margins. Van Gelder knew of no proof of the first state of the etching of this plate (before the transfer to stone), but a proof printed in reddish brown on chine appliqué was with A. Bonafous-Murat in 1992 (Rodolphe Bresdin, 1822-1885, Paris, 1992, no. 85). Our plate is probably a second proof of this first state. It should be noted here that the margins of the copper plate were poorly cleaned at the time of printing, and that the proof bears the stamp affixed by Bresdin himself (Lugt 295b) on fine proofs.

Framed.
