Cabinet à poser en trompe-l'oeil. Augsburg. Ca. 1570-1590.

A fine Augsburg marquetry cabinet. C. 1570-1590 Black lacquered wood, inlay of various types of tinted wood. A central door depicting a prancing horse in front of an arcade. On the drawers exotic animals (lion, wild boar, doe, bull and jackal) and exotic flora. Compartment with optically ten drawers, yet only six actual drawers. This type of marquetry was created in South Germany, with Augsburg as the main centre from the second half of the 16th. Motives focuss on classically inspired subjects with panels featuring classical ruins amongst dramatic landscapes. We join: M. Callaerts (ed.), Kunst- und Wunderkammer.
