Description

PROFILE OF MAURE Head in high relief of veined black marble (paragone ?) carved, on an octagonal plate of white marble framed with porphyry. Italy, late 17th century. In an octagonal frame in carved and gilded wood from the Regency period. Height : 42 cm - Width : 35,5 cm (Small chips, restorations) The use of different colored marbles goes back to the Antiquity. These games of color allowed very interesting chromatic contrasts. This tradition was revived in Italy in the 17th century, particularly on sculptures representing Moors. This type of sculpture lent itself perfectly to the use of multiple types of marble. On our head, we note the treatment of the hair, sculpted in a succession of small, very precise and almost angular curls. This type of treatment is found on busts of Moors attributed to Nicolas Cordier (1567 - 1612) and Melchior Barthel (1625 - 1672).
