Description

MAEBYEONG VASE in stoneware, glazed in copper brown on a celadon ground, richly decorated with peony flowers and foliage scrolls, the base and shoulder decorated with stylized chrysanthemum petals. (Neck damaged and restored; cracks of about 2.5 cm and about 1.5 cm; gold restoration on the body). Korea, Koryo dynasty, 12th-13th centuries. AN IRON-BROWN DECORATED CELADON MAEBYEONG VASE, KOREA, 12TH-13TH CENTURY. HEIGHT. 27 CM (10 5/8 IN.) PROVENANCE Former collection of Roger Chambard (1904-1982), French ambassador to Seoul (1959-1969). NOTE Similar object in the collection of the National Museum of Korea, reference Deoksu 4930.
