New edition of this famous work, which was placed on the index as soon as it appeared. It is illustrated with 7 frontispieces by Eisen, 7 folding maps by Bonne (3 of which are repeated). The work was written by Abbé Raynal, with the collaboration of Diderot and d'Holbach for the philosophical part, Dutesta for information on trade and customs in the Indies, Pechmèja, Abbé Martin de Deleyre, d'Aranda and others. The work was a great success, and is divided into four main parts: the East Indies, South America, the West Indies (and the slave trade), North America, with a concluding section devoted to Europe and its colonies. The third edition, published in 1780, was condemned by the censors. The work took sides against slavery, denouncing its atrocities. Handwritten bookplates 19th c. Frédéric Houriet (?) and H. Fane (?).
