JAN BRUEGHEL I (1568-1625)

(follower) Landscape with grain harvesters. Panel. Provenance and certificate: Gallery Florence de Voldère, Paris, 19.04.2007, as Peter Snayers (1592-1667). Several paintings of Jan Brueghel in collaboration with Joos de Momper (1564-1635) illustrate the harvesting at the end of summer. In some cases, these paintings are part of a series depicting the four seasons. A very similar painting by Jan Brueghel and De Momper is housed at the collection of Nationaal Museum in Oslo (inv. NG.M.01359). The present painting showcases a vibrant use of colour, a sense for depth in the landscape and a personal approach towards the genre. It is most likely that one artist painted the figures, which are very close to the staffage figures of Jan Brueghel I, and another artist painted the landscape in the background. This landscape is painted skilfully and shows some relation to the Antwerp landscape painters of the late 16th century. An attribution to Peter Snayers seems, with the current knowledge available on his oeuvre, rather difficult to support. He is mainly known for his landscapes with cavalry in combat or illustrations of military campaigns that are situated between cartography and landscape art, such as the Siege of Breda in the collection of the Museo del Prado (inv. P001748). 40.5 x 72 cm (52.5 x 84 cm) Condition: Volledig geparketteerd.
