EMILLE GEORGE dit "GEO" WEISS (1861-1929)

Gallant scene in Riquewihr, 1892 Important oil on canvas signed and dated lower left. Nice frame in wood and gilded stucco. Private collection in Alsace, the painting has always belonged to the family. Dimensions : 92 x 73 cm French painter born in Strasbourg and died in Barbizon, student of Léon Bonnat and Antoine Grison, Géo Weiss painted mainly portraits, landscapes and still lifes. He made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1880 and exhibited regularly at the Salon des artistes français. Founder of the Salon d'Automne of which he became the treasurer, some of his paintings were inspired by Ernest Meissonier, and were also close to the tradition of certain Swiss or Alsatian painters, such as Gustave Brion.
