Presumed portrait of Shivaji Polychrome pigments and gold on ivory. India, Company School, 19th century. 6 x 4,5 cm Certificate FR2207510263-K, issued on 02/09/2022 Provenance : French private collection, catalogued in the collection as acquired in 1993 at Drouot. This portrait depicts an elegant man wearing a beautiful conical turban adorned with pearls, and sporting a rich gold necklace encrusted with kundan gems. His physical characteristics and his atypical turban echo the various known portraits of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, founder of the Maratha Empire who opposed the Mughals and then the British. The miniature is presented in a medallion in a wooden frame carved with floral motifs, which evokes the productions of Nagina.
