Page from a Jain Kalpasutra Polychrome pigments and gold on paper. North India, probably Gujarat, 15th-16th century. (Small visible chips, holes, nevertheless good preservation). 11 x 26,5 cm Provenance : French private collection, catalogued in the collection as acquired in 2000 at Drouot The Kalpasutra is a Jain text containing the biographies of the Tirthankaras. The elongated shape of the pages is reminiscent of palm leaf manuscripts. The polychrome rosettes are reminiscent of the bindings of these ancient manuscripts. This page is illustrated with a crowned figure under a parasol, conversing with a yogi, in red, white and gold on a blue background.
