Vasanti Ragini (Page of a Ragamala) Polychrome pigments and gold on paper. India, Rajasthan, Bundi or Kotah, 18th century. (Reduced margins, slight wear). 18.5 x 12 cm Provenance: French private collection, catalogued in the collection as acquired in March 1995 at Drouot (expert Kevorkian). This beautiful painting from the Kotah region is an illustration of the musical mode (or raga) called Vasanti Ragini. It depicts six beautiful young women, dressed in richly colored outfits and adorned with many jewels, happily picking flowers from the trees. In the sky, a golden sun and two stilt-walkers in flight overlook them. A painting by Kotah with a treatment of the faces similar to this one is in the Victoria & Albert Museum (inv. no. IS.212-1953).
