Description

Interior panel of a Nias house (Indonesia) The surface is decorated in relief with stylized motifs representing a pair of earrings, which would indicate that it was made for a woman. The stylized vegetal motif may evoke the horns of a buffalo and supports a probable representation of a jewelry box or a pedestal on which a statuette of an ancestor may have rested. Wood with a beautiful brown patina. 80 x 40 cm Cf. D. Newton & alii "Arts of the South Seas - Collections of the Barbier-Mueller Museum" 1998, pp 22 to 28. Provenance : According to the collector's notes, it was acquired from the gallery L'Île du Démon (Paris) in December 1982.
