Description

Yoruba cup carrier (Nigeria) Superb and ancient cup held by a female figure most probably from the Igbomina region. Beyond the perfection of the sculpture of the figure, the particularity of this work lies in the treatment of the cup which initially had a lid with a flap. This uncommon detail, perhaps linked to a specific use, or the workshop of a master sculptor, can be found among others on the famous bowl in the Kjersmeier collection (Copenhagen), superbly photographed by Man Ray around 1933. Wood with a superb patina of use, small visible accidents. H : 24,5 cm Provenance : According to the collector's notes, it was acquired from the Monbrison gallery (Paris) on November 7, 1974.
