Frankfurt 1662-1720. 36.5 x 23 cm. With 18 copper titles, 578 (st. 590) copper plates with views and maps, and numerous copper portraits in the text. Bindings have been removed, loose book blocks are in new vellum cases with gilt spine titles. Wüthrich III, 113ff - "From our own reading, we would like to say that there is no comparable and equally rich treasure trove of contemporary historical documentation in the German language on the age of the Thirty Years War and that of Louis XIV" (Wüthrich). - "A valuable repertory of the history of that period, which no well-appointed library should be without .... Contains ... in its earlier volumes a particularly excellent decoration in the attached excellent copperplate engravings by Merian" (Ebert 22723). - Of the complete work Volumes I-XII appeared in up to 6 editions, from Vol. XIII appeared only one or two editions. The present volumes all in later or last edition. Between the editions, the number of plates varies, so that hardly any copy has the same number. The present. The present collation closely follows Wüthrich. - Set of 18 volumes (of 21) of the famous chronicle and topography of Europe. All in later or last editions. With 18 illustr. engr. title page, 578 (of 590) copperplates with views and maps and with numerous engr. portraits in the text. Loose quires (covers removed) in new vellum cases with gilt title on spine. - In general well preserved set.
