COURBET.- Les Curés en goguette.

With six drawings by Gustave Courbet. Ghent Exhibition of 1868. Paris, A. Lacroix, Verboeckhoven et Cie, 1868, 8° with all margins, 32 p., 6 plates in fine, br. (spine damaged, some freckles). First edition of this anonymous anti-clerical pamphlet illustrated with 6 black drawings. "Gustave Courbet painted for the 1863 Salon a picture destined to raise the most violent storms. In this work, entitled "The Return of the Conference", he depicted country priests returning joyfully and staggering from a confraternal banquet where they had drowned in the bottom of their glass the ardors of theological controversy. The jury refused this painting because it was an outrage to religious morality" (Larousse). Courbet placed it five years later in the series of 6 plates which illustrates the Curés en goguette. Rare.
