Born in 1936 in Hòa Loi, Nguyen Thanh Minh was a self-taught soldier-painter during the Indochina War. He attended drawing classes at the Haiphong Committee for Culture in 1957 before graduating from the University of Fine Arts of Vietnam in 1970 (lacquer section) where he studied under Hoang Tich Chu. After becoming a professor, he had a solo exhibition in 2007.
