A Kongolese Club
Mace
DR Congo
Ohne Sockel / without base
Wood. L 37 cm.
Provenance:
Helmut (1931-2021) and Marianne Zimmer, Zurich.
Among the insignia of power that illustrate the social status of their owners are in some places also elaborately carved clubs.
In addition to being physical objects of use (e.g., as weapons or tools), they are also metaphorical extensions of the hand and emphasize the presence of ancestors in conversation. They illustrate the ancestry of the owners and are presented on the occasion of public processions.
