An Ewe Figure, "kronkronbale"
Figure, "kronkronbale"
Ewe, Togo
Ohne Sockel / without base
Terracotta. H 31 cm
Provenance:
Helmut (1931-2021) and Marianne Zimmer, Zurich.
The clay figures called kronkronbale ("children of former times") come from the area along the Mono River, whose lower reaches form the border between Togo and Benin.
They still stand on ancestral altars and are sacrificed with millet porridge, among other things. Ritualized by voodoo priests, they are given the power to fulfill certain orders addressed to them.
