Jean VILLERI (1896-1982) Abstract Composition Oil on canvas Signed lower left and dated 58 Exposed frame in natural wood Size : 115,6 x 196,2 cm. 45,51 x 77,24 in. Small wear to the canvas, some rubbing Jean VILLERI (1896-1982) is a painter of Italian origin, he arrived in France around 1906 and grew up in the south of France, in Cannes. In 1934, the painter joined the "abstraction-creation, non-figurative art" movement alongside Albert GLEIZES (1881-1953), Frantisek KUPKA (1871-1957) and Jean ARP (1886-1966). He also became friends with the poet René CHAR (1907-1988). From 1955, Jean VILLERI starts to introduce the material in his works. He then used different mediums to build his creations. In 1980, a retrospective exhibition was organized at the Royal Convent of Saint-Maximin, thus paying tribute to his work.
