[TYARD (Pontus de)].

Ɵ Solitaire premier, or Dialogue of poetic fury. Second edition, augmented. Paris, Galiot du Pré, s.d. [1575]. In-4, red morocco, triple gilt fillet, ornate spine, interior lace, gilt edges (Capé). Second edition, dedicated to the countess of Retz, of this speech initially published in Lyon by Jean de Tournes in 1552. Printed in italics, the title placed in an attractive woodcut frame. Pontus de Tyard is one of the most faithful French followers of Ficino. The first Solitaire is a popularization of the theory of "poetic fury" largely inspired by Ficino's interpretation of the Banquet and Plato's Ion. Tyard affirms that the true poetry comes from a "divine fury". Following Ficino very closely (he often translates him) Tyard defines the four fury according to the "degrees" that the Soul follows in its slow ascent towards God. [Poetry constitutes the first step of an ascent towards God, and towards Love (James Helgeson, Harmonie divine et subjectivité poétique chez Maurice Scève, Droz, 2001, p. 32). J. P. Barbier-Mueller, III, n°47. - Diane Barbier-Mueller, Inventaire..., n°866.
