Description

SANGUINET (Étienne de).

Ɵ The Dodecade of the Gospel. Bergerac, Gilbert Vernoy, 1614. In-8, soft vellum with covers, remains of laces (Period binding). First edition of this poem inspired by the Gospel, through which Étienne Sanguinet, a Gascon poet-soldier who was for a time in the service of Maurice de Nassau, sings the prophecies, incarnation, birth, sufferings, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ. The twelfth and last song deals with the Hell of the devils and the damnez. A very rare printing from Bergerac, a stronghold of the Protestants in the Bordeaux region, from the presses of Gilbert Vernoy, a typographer active in the city between 1608 and 1634. Only a handful of copies of this edition are known, and it is not cited by Caillet or Dorbon. Curious title-frontispiece engraved in intaglio, decorated with allegorical figures of Justice and Peace. Title lined, some traces of worms in the lower margin, marginal wetness on a few leaves. Volume detached from the spine, binding a little worn and stained, lower spine restored. Diane Barbier-Mueller, Inventaire..., n°802.
