Ɵ - FICIN (Marsile). Discourse of the honest love, on the Banquet of Plato. Paris, Abel L'Angelier, 1588. In-8, red morocco, jansenist, spine with gilt title, inner lace, gilt edges on marble (R. Raparlier). Second edition of Le Fèvre de La Boderie's translation of the text by the humanist Marsilio Ficino (1433-1499), a work that had a profound influence on the Platonic philosophy of love in Renaissance poetry. This translation had appeared ten years earlier. This edition is dedicated to Queen Marguerite of Navarre, and was shared between Abel L'Angelier and Lucas Breyer. It is augmented by Gabriel Chappuys' translation into French of the Commento de Jean Pic de la Mirandole sur la canzone d'amore de Girolamo Benivieni, which is itself a paraphrase in verse of the commentary by Marsile Ficin: this translation by the Tourangeau humanist appears here for the first time. A Norman poet, Guy Le Fèvre de La Boderie (1541-1598) was a disciple of the great kabbalist Guillaume Postel, and worked in Antwerp for Plantin as an editor, translator and proofreader.
