ZURBARÁN WORKSHOP

Oil on canvas The present composition of the Holy Face or Cloth of Veronica belongs to a group of works dated around 1631-35, starting from the first signed and dated example by Zurbarán of 1631. This model, which had notable success due to the number of copies and replicas that are known, it stands out for its peculiarity, since there are elements that are Zurbarán's own invention, such as the face blurred in reddish tones in three quarters and the symmetrical way of placing Veronica's cloth subject with little bows and pins on a dark background. In this set of works, there are varying degrees of intervention by the master and the maker. A report from the Technical Institute for Expertise and Restoration is attached attributing the work to Zurbarán.
