Description

28 diverted playing cards. [C. 1759-1801] Full-length, woodcut and stenciled, ± 8.5 x 6 cm (slightly worn, 1 card 7T with wormhole, 1 card 8C with crease and hole). Mounted under photo corners on backing sheets. Various playing cards, mostly produced in Belgium in the second half of the 18th century, used as writing or printing materials. Cards from an incomplete set were thus given a second life. 13 cards with mss indications, mostly of accounting, calculations or correspondence extracts with names such as "l'avocat Fontaine rue de la Halle", "l'avocat Dumont près de La Cour", "Mr Vander-borght Seigr de Saintes" (?), "votre très humble et très obéissant serviteur De Tilly" (?), etc. 15 cards with printed reverse, including 10 death announcements: Madame la douairière Schockaert (baroness), Pierre de Pau (canon), Marie-Thérèse de Landas, Jeanne-Catherine De Grez, Maximilien-Casimir de Bournonville, Jean-Baptiste Van Schoor, Anne-Catherine Taymans, Jean Tailliu, Thérèse Caïmo, Charles Ryelandt. Some with the ms. transcription of dates of the republican calendar. 2 wedding announcements : Jean Vande Male and Sophie Ysenbrant, the knight of Roosendale and mademoiselle Coppieters. 2 printed poems and a woodcut. With 4 cards of c. 1963, the back of which is an invitation to the international exhibition "Five centuries of playing cards" by the S.A. Léonard Biermans in Turnhout.
