Arpad SZENES (1897-1985) Portrait of Fernanda de Castro Oil on canvas, signed lower left. Height : 65 cm 65 cm - Width: 50 cm Provenance : Private collection G., Montpellier. We thank the Arpad Szenes-Vieira da Silva Committee for confirming the authenticity of this work referenced in their archives under number 177. Of Hungarian origin, Arpad Szenes met the Portuguese artist Maria Elena Vieira da Silva in 1929. A loving and pictorial duo, their Parisian painting is one of the most beautiful post-war abstract productions. Influenced by each other, it was when he met his wife that Szenes asserted himself as a painter. Vieira da Silva's rigor transformed him and his studio had up to two hundred students. The couple undertook several trips, including one to Lisbon in 1939. Fernanda de Castro, a friend of the couple, was a figure of Portuguese literature. A poet and author of songs for the Fado, Szenes presents an intimate portrait of his friend, as if she were sitting in a "mysterious garden of my distant childhood, a bewitched kingdom lost in the distance.
