Description

MONTAIGNE (Michel de): The Essays of Michel Seigneur de Montaigne. New edition, found after the death of the author, revised & increased by him by a third more than the previous impressions. A Paris, chez Abel L'ANGELIER, 1595 (1602). One volume. 22 by 35,5 cm. (6)-523-(1bl)-231 pages. Full contemporary calf, decoration in the center of the boards. Binding very damaged: part of the spine missing, boards detached). 1st quire detached, writing on title page, one leaf with paper missing from lower margin (without missing text), scattered freckles, more accentuated on a few pages. Various small interior defects. Last leaf with old restoration, without missing. Correct interior condition. 7 missing leaves : Pages 27-28, 55-56, and 67 to 76. The errata page is covered by the restoration sheet on page 231. It appears transparent with missing text in the margin. Headbands, initials, and two lamp-ends. 1595 is the first edition given by Marie de Gournay, Montaigne's "daughter-in-law", three years after the author's death. It is increased by 1409 important additions collected by her in the manuscripts left by Montaigne. It is the first complete edition of the Essays, which fixes the definitive text. Our copy does not include the preface by Marie de Gournay. It includes the notice to the reader (dated June 12, 1580), and the table. 18 handwritten annotations in ink, mostly in the margin, on the first 40 pages, of a very technical form. It was not possible for us to verify if these were the handwritten annotations made by Madame de Gournay on the first edition published by her. The edition of 1595 having been very successful, L'Angelier recovered the unsold leaves of his associate Sonnius, and recomposed copies, always with the date of 1595, composed of original leaves supplemented by some reprinted leaves. This edition was published in 1602. It can be recognized by the change of the typographical mark, the one of our copy is the one referenced 556 by Renouard, and by the absence of a privilege on the back of the title. A rare book, which we present here in an imperfect, but nevertheless precious copy.
