Description

(Roman law) JUSTINIAN I (Emperor): Justiniani Imperatoris edicta : item Justini, Tiberii ac Leonis Augustorum Novelle constitutiones. Henrico Agylaeo interprete. Lugduni, Apud Gulielmum Rouillium, 1571. One volume. 7,5 by 12 cm. 913-(13) pages + 1 blank f. Full contemporary brown morocco, spine with six raised bands, decorated, boards framed with a gilt fillet and a cold fillet, gilt medallion in the center. Very nice work of chiseling on the gilt edges. A fine copy. Upper headband missing, two corners worn, jaws cracked on 3 and 1 cm (without any gravity). Very nice binding. Title page with slightly worn edges (without missing text), otherwise fine condition inside. The princeps edition of the Novelles of Leo VI the Wise (866 - 912) is due to Scringer, who only imperfectly corrected the manuscript; Henri Estienne printed it in 1558 and published a series of corrections at the end of the volume. The first Latin translation appeared in 1560 by Henri Agylee. The first addition of Leo's work, the Novelles, to Justinian's work, took place in 1571 in the edition of this copy. In this edition, the text of Scringer [in Greek] facing the translation of Agylee, occupies the pages 235 to 665. Then follow: The Constitution of Zeno, the Castigationes of Henri Estienne, The Book of the Fiefs, The Constitutions of Frederick II, the Extravagant and the Book of the Peace of Constance. S. von Gultlingen, Index Aureliana X-p. 172: 742. Baudrier XVIII-p. 337; J.A.B. Mortreuil, Histoire du droit byzantin et du droit romain de l'Empire d'Orient, pp. 304-306. "This edition has become the basis for all unglosed editions." (Mortreuil). A very nice copy of this rare book, printed by Guillaume ROUILLE, famous printer from Lyon.
