Description

Spanish School of the first half of the 18th century. "Flight into Egypt". Watercolour on parchment. Measurements: 22 x 17 cm (total). The scene represents the Holy Family in a stop in its way of Flight to Egypt. It has a border of gilt paper around it. The Flight into Egypt is an episode from the Gospel of Matthew, whose varied iconography has been represented in art since antiquity. Three main motifs can be distinguished: the flight itself, the rest during the flight to Egypt, and the return (much less depicted). These works are called codex miniae, which were handwritten and illustrated books that were produced in the "Scriptorium" or specialised workshops of monasteries by monks with high artistic and doctrinal qualifications for the monasteries themselves, churches and kings.
