" The affairs of the republic are still in the best state. Inside, the national convention continues to show itself with energy and dignity. The committees are formed, and little by little the factions are destroyed. Outside, our successes are always as fast, as brilliant. Everywhere our armies are victorious; everywhere the emigrants are in horror and the aristocrats in the box". Chaillon describes in detail the surrender without combat of the city of Worms to the "brave Custine", who is now heading towards Coblentz: "I do not think that it is with rose water that he purifies this den of our cy-devant". The army is approaching Mayence, "and it is not too much of a flattery to expect a deputation of hams from that country soon.
