Camp of JALÈS. Knight of LA BEAUME. L.A.S., Chambéry August 1, 1792, to a count, under the address of Marc Paul Philibert, merchant in Mendrizio; 2 pages in-4, address. Interesting letter on the end of the camp of Jalès, entrenched camp of the royalists in the Velay; they were taken and massacred there on July 12, 1792... "they committed all the possible horrors [...] my brother the canon was martirised more than fifty ecclesiastics were the prey of these entrepophages". Languedoc was however in "the best dispositions. If the operations of M. de SAILLANT [the leader of the royalists of Jalès] had not been premature, there is no doubt that Nismes would have been taken and should have been protected by fifteen thousand Catholics of the surroundings, but the defeat of Jalès prevented this project from being carried out...
