JOUVE (Paul) & KIPLING (Rudyard). The Jungle Book [and the Second Book]. Translated from the English by Louis Fabulet and Robert d'Humières. Paris, Société du livre contemporain, 1919. Large in-4 brown morocco, gilt and cold filleting on spine and boards, smooth spine with title, author and artist in gilt letters, red morocco lining with gilt and cold filleting, brown silk endpapers, gilt on witnesses, covers and spine preserved, in half morocco folder with flaps and slipcase (Gruel). Spine of the folder unstained. The illustration by Paul JOUVE includes 130 color compositions, 17 of them out of text, woodcut by SCHMIED and printed on his hand presses, the out of text on strong Arches. [[[[[ VARIABLE BACKGROUNDS ON ABOUT TWENTY LEAVES]]]] Edition at only 125 copies on Arches wove paper for the Société du Livre Contemporain, numbered and nominative; n°39 for M. A. Lamarre, enriched with an ORIGINAL DRAWING in pen signed (black panther on the lookout). Attached to this copy, in an identical binding signed by Gruel, a volume of ARTIST'S PROOFS containing the PRINTING PRINTS of P. Jouve's illustrations for this work, namely: the cover on Japon in trial proof decorated with a magnificent composition by Jouve representing a black panther lying on a tree branch, 2 artist's proofs by P. Jouve's artist's proofs for title essays (with handwritten mention of "Bon à tirer" by Schmied), and 66 proofs (14 hors texte, 14 headings, 14 lettering, 24 illustrations in-t., 7 of which accompanied by text leaves), 59 of which are handwritten with the mention "Bon à tirer" as well as Schmied's handwritten remarks and annotations. Some out-of-text compositions are on Japon paper. The volume includes after the cover, 2 different leaves of false titles with each on the back the justification printed in the name of Paul Jouve and the title leaf. Very slight foxing on 3 or 4 leaves. Superb and rare copy of this masterpiece illustrated by the animal master Paul Jouve, the most sought after of his works, in a sumptuous binding by Gruel and enriched with the volume of the printing orders.
