MANZONI (Alessandro). I promessi sposi, storia milanese del secolo XVII scoperta e rifatta da Alessandro Manzoni, edizione riveduta dall'autore. Storia della colonna infame inedita. Milano, Dalla tipografia Guglielmini e Redaelli, 1840. In-8 half brown basane, ribbed book, gilt title, brown percaline boards with black and gold decoration, red tr. (binding of the time). Very numerous illustrations engraved in the text after GONIN. Spine and spine rubbed, second board partly discolored, very rare and very light freckles. A fine copy. Rare first illustrated edition, sought after, of this historical novel ("Les Fiancés") published in several versions between 1821 and 1842 and considered as one of the major writings of Italian literature, and as the most representative work of the Risorgimento and of Italian Romanticism. From a structural point of view, it is the first modern novel in Italian literature. This work also had a great influence on the definition of an Italian national language. The story, which narrates the thwarted love of Renzo and Lucia, takes place in Lombardy between 1628 and 1630, at the time of the Spanish domination.
