[JOST DE VILLENEUVE (Daniel). The philosopher traveler in a country unknown to the inhabitants of the earth. By Mr. de Listonai. Amsterdam, at the publisher's expense, 1761. 2 vol. in-12, (table of volume II bound at the beginning of volume I), marbled fawn calf, spine with ornate nerves, title and gilt fillet on the edges, marbled tr. (binding of the time). Covers and corners worn. First edition of this utopian journey to the moon (and its magnificent city of Selenopolis), sometimes attributed without major reason to Tiphaigne de La Roche, but which is indeed the work of Jost de Villeneuve (of whom we know almost nothing, except that he was for a while director of finance of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany). There is an Italian translation published in 1771 (Cioranescu, XVIII, 34630).
