First edition, which was, according to Baudelaire, sold out in two days. Flaubert started writing this novel shortly after the end of Madame Bovary's trial, and set the action in Carthage three centuries before Christ, far from the Normandy of the mid-nineteenth century. Some minor rubbing on the head and spine, rare foxing. A good first edition copy in its original binding (Vicaire, III, 724.)
