Description

[DONNEAU (François)]. La Cocuë imaginaire. Comédie. Following the copy printed in Paris [Amsterdam], sn [Abraham Wolfgang], 1662. In-12, [5] ff, 26 pp, eggplant morocco, spine ribbed with gilt fillets and double boxes, triple gilt fillet on the boards, double gilt fillet on the edges, gilt edges on marbling, large gilt garlands on the back covers, navy tabis lined endpapers (Reymann). Bound in the suite: [THE BAKER OF CHALUSSAY]. Elomire, that is to say Molière, hypocondre, or Les Médecins vengez. Comédie. According to the copy printed in Paris [Amsterdam], 1671, [3] ff, 76 pp, with a burlesque frontispiece after L. Weyen. This small volume gathers two parodic plays composed by enemies of Molière, with an explicitly slanderous aim: La Cocüe imaginaire is the second edition of Les Amours d'Alcippe et de Céphise, originally published in 1661, and attributable to one François Donneau; a caustic parody of Le Malade imaginaire. Elomire, is in a second edition, rarer than the original of 1670. Molière sued to prevent the publication of the first edition, a lawsuit which he won; it must be said that the enterprise, without any dramatic value, had as its only goal to harm Molière by linking imputations and slanders. (Cioranescu, XVII, 25 872 (for the original of 1660) and 41 121.) For both texts, see Guibert II, Ouvrages et documents divers relatifs à Molière, n° 21 and n° 51. Bookplate of the director Jean Meyer (1914-2003). A very nice copy.
