Description

Anonymous. The Privileges of Cuckoldry, a necessary work for both current Cornards and budding Cocus. Vicon, Jean Cornichon, à l'enseigne du Coucou, 1722. In-12 red jansenist morocco, spine ribbed, gilt title, filleted edges, gilt tr. int. garland (19th c. binding not signed). Rare edition (it was reprinted by J. Gay in 1860), the first one decorated with a curious allegorical frontispiece (often missing) representing the Devil seated on his throne, in front of an assembly of men and women, holding in his right hand a pair of horns. According to Paul Lacroix, the work could be attributed either to Eustache LE NOBLE or to CHAPPUZEAU (author of the Cercle des Femmes), but these are only conjectures. A fine copy. (Gay III, 864; Barbier III, 1043.)
