Description

BOURGELAT (Claude). Elements of the veterinary art. Treaty of the external conformation of the horse; of its beauty and its defects; of the considerations which it is important to take into account when choosing a horse for different services; of the care it requires to keep it healthy; of the choice of its food; of its multiplication, or of stud farms, etc. For the use of the students of the Royal Veterinary Schools. Seventh edition, published with notes by J. B. Huzard (...). With figures. Paris, Madame Huzard, 1818. In-8, xvj pp, pp. 17-576, with an engraved frontispiece, lacking the figures of the famous Proportion géométrale, half tan basane, smooth spine decorated, title p., corners in green vellum, marbled edges (period binding). Corners dulled, headbands rubbed. The first edition of this anatomical treatise had been given as early as 1770 under the title of Explanation of the geometrical proportions of the horse; it will be only with the second (of 1775) that the title of Traité de la conformation extérieure du cheval (Treaty of the external conformation of the horse) appeared. Linked to the foundation of the veterinary schools of Lyon and Alfort, the figure of Claude Bourgelat (1712-1779) is rightly considered the true founder of modern veterinary art. (Mennessier de La Lance I, 161.)
